As Michael Portillo returns to our television screens with series 4 of BBC 2's Great Continental Railway Journeys you may be inspired to take the train and follow in the footsteps of Edwardian rail travellers around Europe.

Ffestiniog Travel can help you plan your own Continental railway journey based on any of the GCRJ episodes that mirror rail routes featured in George Bradshaw’s 1913 handbook to continental rail travel.

In episode 1 of series 4 Portillo travels from Sofia to Istanbul, enjoying a taste of Bulgarian culture en route. The fourth series also sees him travelling from Vienna to Trieste via the Habsburg imperial line across the awe-inspiring Semmering Pass, the first mountain railway to cross a high alpine range affording spectacular views.

Look out for the next episode when he takes a tour of Italy, a favourite Edwardian destination. Michael begins his journey in Tuscany, travelling the scenic route from Pisa to Lake Garda, the largest of the Italian Lakes. Stops are made en route at Carrara, Bologna, Florence and Gargnano where Michael explores Italian history, culture and cuisine.
