You can be forgiven for thinking a holiday in Spain means packed beaches and crowded tourist resorts. But there is a lot more to Spain than beaches and one particular region remains remarkably unspoilt, boasting a level of history, culture, city chic and coastline beauty to match the best in the world.
The Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia provinces are home to stunning scenery as mountains meet meadows that gently slope towards the Bay of Biscay and Atlantic Ocean.
What’s even better for those who enjoy rail holidays is that you can journey along this scenic coastline on a narrow gauge railway! The FEVE line runs from Bilbao in the Basque Country to Santander and on to Oviedo (where local services serve the triangle of Gijón, Avilés and Oviedo) with a third section to Ferrol in Galicia. The route is breathtakingly beautiful, skirting beaches, snaking through a succession of limestone gorges and through the stunning Picos de Europa mountain range.
But you need time to fully appreciate this journey and our Green Hills of Spain escorted rail tour certainly makes the most of the many destinations en route that are brimming with history and culture including San Sebastian - the 2016 European Capital of Culture.
This 15-day tour begins with a flight to Spain’s artistic city Barcelona for a 2-night sightseeing stay before heading north to San Sebastian to begin our scenic narrow gauge rail tour, where green hills meet golden sands.
First stop Bilbao for a 3-night stay allowing time with a travel pass to visit the famous Guggenheim Museum, head to the top of the Artxanda Mountain for panoramic views of the city, take a ride on the Vizcaya Bridge, the extraordinary hanging Transporter Bridge of Biscay, or visit the traditional villages and vineyards found within the region. For those with a keen interest in trains Bilbao is also home to the Basque Railway Museum which houses one of the best collections of locos and rolling stock in Europe and runs steam train rides.
San Sebastian and Bilbao, together with our stays in Santander, Oviedo, Santiago de Compostela are all destinations listed in Touropia’s 10 of the Most Amazing Destinations in Northern Spain ( – a must read travel article that gives a tempting taste of this region.
Northern Spain is both rustic and cosmopolitan, you get the best of both worlds – views, great food and wine, lots of history and culture and the icing on the cake – great rail journeys on some of the most spectacular rail lines in Europe! Here is a flavour of what you can expect from this wonderful holiday.
