Chris Tarrant’s Rail Journey through Georgia
– more Holiday Dream than Extreme!

If you didn't see the Chris Tarrant: Extreme Railways TV programme on Monday 21 November then we recommend you tune in to My5 catch-up for a wonderful taste of Georgia – one of Ffestiniog Travel’s hot destinations in 2017.

The TV episode sees Chris travel on the historic Soviet Trans-Caucasus Railway, beginning in the Azerbaijani city of Baku before exploring the Georgian capital Tbilisi's vintage metro system, a mountain rail bridge, designed by Eiffel, and a tunnel held together with egg yolk.

Azerbaijan is not portrayed as a particularly appealing destination, but in contrast Georgia offers the more adventurous railway tourist an abundance of culture, remote scenery and wonderful train journeys.

The various trains Chris travels on in Georgia also feature in our Georgia – Springtime in the Caucasus - escorted tour. This 12-day holiday journeys on the narrow gauge railway between Borjomi to Bakuriani and crosses the famous bridge designed by the French engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, more famously known for his Paris tower. Eiffel was commissioned to design the bridge by the Romanovs, the Russian royal family. The construction was brought to Georgia in pieces and installed on the river Tsemistskali in 1902.

The programme is a great advert for Georgia in general, despite being the birthplace of Stalin. Our tour does include a visit to the Stalin museum, primarily to view his personal railway carriage, which also features in the TV programme.

Our Georgia holiday is part of our Small & Traditional tour range and includes more remote parts of Georgia, far removed from the tourist crowds. We escorted our first tour to the country this year and due to its success and continued interest we are delighted to be returning in 2017.

Springtime in the Caucasus – Departs 9 May 2017 – 12 Days from £2,256pp
