Llangollen

Apart from being the Festival Capital of Wales, Llangollen and the Dee Valley has a wealth of attractions and activities to appeal to almost everybody.

Llangollen has many natural wonders. There are mountains, white water rivers including the spectacular River Dee canals with horse-drawn boats, The Llangollen Steam Railway with steam trains that chug along the Dee Valley, the Horseshoe Pass, the Horseshoe Falls and all in easy reach of Chester and Wrexham, Llangollen is easily accessible by rail. Fast Intercity services link London (Euston) with various stations in North Wales including Wrexham, Ruabon and Chirk. 2 day return tickets from Birmingham to Chirk start at £23.80 per person. Arriving at Chirk railway station, you will then take a short bus trip from Chirk to Llangollen with buses running every hour from 9.45am onwards.

On arriving in Llangollen you should make your way towards the Llangollen Wharf where you can set off on a picturesque journey along the historic canal. You can embark on a relaxing 45 minute horse drawn journey along the River Dee or opt for the 2 hour motorised Canal tour that takes in the magnificent Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. The country's biggest navigable aqueduct towers a massive 126ft (38m) above the River Dee supported by 18 stone piers and is the final destination of the trip. A courtesy coach waits to bring you back to Llangollen to enjoy the rest of the afternoon.

Prices for the 45 min horse drawn trip start at £6.50 for adults, £3.50 for Children (family ticket 2+2 = £17.00). Prices for the 2 Hours motorised trip to Pontcysyllte aqueduct start at £12.50 for adults and £10.50 for Children.

Alternatively, why not take a scenic trip on the Llangollen Heritage railway which departs from the station located next to the river Dee Bridge in Llangollen town. Trains run on weekdays between April and October, and most weekends throughout the year.

Formed in 1975, Llangollen Railway is a mainly steam hauled heritage railway originating in Llangollen and continuing for 7 ½ miles upstream following the river Dee to the village of Carrog. In addition to the daily trips Llangollen railway also offer themed excursions including Rail & Ale evenings, Murder Mystery tours and many more.

Prices start at £12.00 for Adults, £10.00 for seniors and £6.00 for children. Family tickets are also available. Prices for the special excursions vary.
